Rory Hie, 16, of Lakewood, Calif., is one of the world’s top junior golfers and yesterday was among 32 golfers to win first round matches at the U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship.
Rory was unfortunately eliminated from US APL on the quarterfinal match by Martin Ureta of Chile, who proceeded to win his semifinal match and became one of the two finalists. Michelle Wie was also eliminated on the quarterfinal.
This morning Rory advanced to the third-round after winning his second-round match with Song Jeon of Korea.
He was up against Korey Mahoney of Michigan today afternoon, where he once again won the match and secured a position for the Quarterfinal against Martin Ureta of Chile tomorrow morning.
All eight quarterfinalists left in the tournament are automatically given exemption for 2006 US APL.
Rory (16) is one of the youngest players to compete in this tournament along with the famous Michelle Wie (15) of Hawaii, who is also among the eight quarterfinalists.

Rory won his first-round match against Tye Alexander of Los Angeles at the 2005 Amateur Public Championship.
“The comeback of the day belonged to 16-year-old Rory Hie of Cerritos, Calif. The Indonesian-born Hie was three down with three to play, but rallied for a 19-hole victory over Tye Alexander of Los Angeles. Hie won 16 with a par, eagled 17, parred 18 and then birdied the par-5 first hole to pull out the win.”

Rory will be playing Song Jeon of Korea tomorrow (07/14/2005) for his second-round match.

Rory Hie of Lakewood, Calif., made a big charge on his last four holes and defeated Tye Alexander of Puerto Rico in 19 holes. Alexander was 3 up with three holes to play. But Hie won the 16th with a par, the 17th with an eagle and the 18th with a par to send the match to extra holes. Hie closed it out with a birdie at the 19th hole, the 599-yard, par-5.
