STUDIES CAN WAIT FOR RORY

From asiantour.com:

Siem Reap, Cambodia, December 12: Indonesia’s Rory Hidayat carded an opening six-under-par 66 at this week’s US$300,000 Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open.

The 20-year-old continued to put in a strong challenge with a second round 71 for a seven-under-par 137 total.

Having turned professional just three months ago, the Indonesian has decided to put his studies at the University of Southern California on hold while he turns his attention to making a living as a professional golfer on the Asian Tour.

This is his blog from the Phokeethra Country Club in Cambodia.

By Rory Hidayat
It was not a bad round of golf for me today although it was not as good as yesterday where I enjoyed a bogey-free round and had six birdies.

With the morning start that I had, I could only manage three birdies and was let down by two bogeys.

But overall it has been good for me, especially since I just turned pro only three months ago.

Obviously the level in professional golf as compared to amateur one is a step higher and having just turned pro, it takes a lot of getting used to.

There’s a lot more depth in the tournaments and I just need to claim that first professional victory on the Asian Tour to get my confidence going and I’m sure everything will fall into place.

I’ve so much passion for golf that I feel that if I had continue my studies in college, my game wouldn’t be able to improved that much.

It was based on this decision and instinct that I was primed for better things in the professional golf circuit that I decided to put my studies at the University of Southern California on hold.

Maybe I’ll decide to go back to my books when I’m 30 years old but for now, I’m want to focus on my golf full-time.

Who knows, my breakthrough win can be this week!

Musthofid, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Rory Hie missed out on the European Tour, but his success in making it to the final stages of the Qualifying School for the tour has been hailed as an impressive achievement never equaled by an Indonesian golfer before.

The 2008 Qualifying School which concluded on Tuesday, gave 32 top players berths in the European Tour and a possible shot at the lucrative season-closing Dubai World Championship next November.

While Rory finished short of the shortlist, the competition saw the [20]-year-old prove his mettle against the rest of the world.

Rory’s European trip came one month after he had won the Mercedes-Benz Championship, part of the ASEAN Tour series, in his pro debut at the Imperial Golf Club in Tangerang.

This was his second tournament in Indonesia, following his participation (then as an amateur) in the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational, in August.

“At his current level of performance, Rory is making himself a good role model for Indonesia’s other young golfers. He plays above the average here,” Indonesian Professional Golf Association secretary-general Agus Triyono said.

His impressive run has drawn sponsorship from Ancora Sports, which, according to Ancora CEO Patrick Young, tied the golfer to a three-year deal.

“The good thing about Rory is he can shoot low numbers … 65. He can beat the world’s best, like Anthony Kim,” Young said during a recent media briefing.

“He was one of only two Asian players in the final along with Chinnarat Phadungsil from Thailand. No players from Korea, none from Japan,” Young added.

The final stages of Qualifying School, which began Nov. 13, featured 156 players at the PGA Golf de Catalunya, Spain,

Rory may now be ruing his missed opportunity at qualifying for the European Tour, especially after his impressive late charge in the first four rounds.

Rory had been on par after rounds of 71, 72 and 73 before regrouping to card five under on 67 to make a cut among 80 players, but then fell to a 73 and 75 to end up in 62nd position.

However, he still has an opportunity to sharpen his skills further against strong contenders since he is entitled to the Challenge Tour, widely regarded as a valuable stepping stone before the European Tour.

In 2007, the European Challenge Tour incorporated 32 tournaments in 23 countries with prize funds totaling 5,279,935 euro, europeantour.com claims.

And Rory should not lack tournaments to hone his skills further while vying for a portion of prizes, a chance an Indonesian golfer has rarely seen.

With tournaments at home far from an international standard, Agus said, there were difficult prospects for Indonesian golfers competing against foreigners.

“Sponsors come and go,” Agus said, adding that the number of tournaments in Indonesia had dropped from 10 in 2007, to 6 this year.

“Therefore, Rory is lucky to be able to compete overseas,” he said.

Ancora Group head Gita Wirjawan said positively, “I believe he (Rory) can be a champion in a big tournament within five years.”

JEREZ - Indonesian golfer Rory Hie recorded a new historical achievement by qualifying for next season’s European Challenge Tour, after obtaining a conditional card from the 6th round of the European Qualifying School in Costa Bellena Golf Club, Spain.

In order to accomplish this feat, Rory competed against 160 of the best young golfers in the world. He made the cut with scores of 71, 72, 73, and 67. In the final two days, Rory carded 73 and 75 to position himself into the top 70, thus securing exemptions into the European Challenge Tour.

Rory stated that obtaining a conditional card to enter the European Challenge Tour will open many more opportunities that will greatly improve his golf career.

“The conditional card allows me to participate in eight to ten of Europe’s best events and compete against some of the world’s top elite golfers. This opportunity will certainly allow me to gain valuable experience and help accumulate points in the world rankings to compete in future tournaments,” said Rory, Thursday (11/20/08).

Patrick Young, as Rory’s manager, is proud of Rory’s accomplishment and will continue to support Rory’s journey to higher levels.

“We, and all of the Indonesian golf community, are truly proud of Rory’s success in overcoming difficult challenges thus far. Rory has shown us that he has an extraordinary talent, driven by an immense desire to succeed and to reach the highest level of achievement. He has successfully represented himself and his country with hard work and dedication in the world of sports, especially in golf,” said the CEO of Ancora Sports.

Rory’s triumph in Europe

Loosely translated from an article by Ria Nurdiani:

JAKARTA (bisnis.com): Rory Hie made a historical achievement in Europe by becoming the first ever Indonesian golfer to advance to the final stage of the European Tour Qualifying School.

Rory carded scores of 69-73-65-71—278 (10-under), finishing T-14th in the 2nd stage to obtain a berth in the final qualifying event of the European Tour.

“Rory’s performance was outstanding, having had extremely limited time to practice,” said Patrick Young, CEO of Ancora Sports (manager and sponsor) in the press release received by Bisnis.

Young stated that Rory only had time for a walk-through of the course just prior to the first round, immediately after arriving in Spain. His arrival in Spain was somewhat delayed due to visa issues.

Young further remarked that Rory is an exceptional young man, and as his manager and sponsor, Ancora Sports is truly proud of Rory’s accomplishment.

“In the third round I shot a 65, 7-under, which was my best score this week. I’ve been able to overcome jet lag issues from the Jakarta-to-Spain trip, and I felt comfortable with my game this week . Now I can focus on practice rounds,” said Rory before going to the final qualifying stage in the PGA Golf de Catalunya in Barcelona.

The final round of the European Qualifying School will be comprised of six rounds of stroke play, with a cut after the fourth round. After the fifth and sixth rounds, the top 30 players will qualify for European Tour membership for the 2009 season, and a chance to compete in Dubai.

“I’m very proud to be the first Indonesian to advance this far to the final European Qualifying stage,” said Rory.

The tournament was held in Costa Bellena Club de Golf, Jerez, Spain.
“I understand my responsibilities as a professional golfer and will work hard on my game to accomplish my goal in Europe and represent the country,” he added.

JAKARTA: Winner of Asean Tour Rory Roland Hidayat is optimistic of advancing to the qualifying stage to be the first Indonesian to play in the European Tour.

Rory, 20, on October 25 won an Asean Tour tournament by shooting 10 under par, 278 (72-65-70-70), which was held in Karawaci Golf Club, Tangerang. Last August at the President Invitational in Kapuk, he did not make the cut.

Golfer Rory Hie begins his career in the professional circuit

Loosely translated from an article by Ria Nurdiani

JAKARTA (Bisnis.com): Young Indonesian golfer Rory Hidayat Hie returns to the Indonesian homeland after 10 years of living in the United States.

The golfer born on September 1, 1988 has only been in Indonesia for a month. Recently Rory successfully won the Asean Golf Tournament that was held in Imperial Golf Course, Karawaci, on October 26. As is known, every amateur golfer must pass the playing ability test (PAT) to attain professional status and participate in the qualifying school (QS).

Last October 12, Rory completed the PAT and became a member of the Indonesian Professional Golf Association by recording a 12-under, the lowest score in the history of the qualification process in Indonesia.

The golfer who was once the 6th-ranked amateur in the world debuted as a professional in the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational last August in the Damai Indah Golf and Country Club, part of the Asian Tour series.

He will leave for Spain next month to participate in the European Tour Qualifying School. Rory relinquished his full-ride scholarship to the University of Southern California to pursue his dream of being a world class professional golfer. “I hope I can be an inspiration to other young golfers in Indonesia,” said Rory in the press conference held at the Moonlight House of Rhythm today.

Mr. Gita Wirjawan, head of Ancora Group who sponsors Rory Hie, is optimistic that Indonesian golfers can aptly compete in the international golf arena. “Rory can be an ambassador,” he said.

Rory Hie Victorious in Karawaci

Loosely translated from an article by Toto Prawoto

Jakarta – The newcomer in the local pro golf circuit, Rory Hie, emerged as the winner of the Mercedes-Benz International Championship 2008 that ended Saturday (10/25) in Karawaci Golf Club, Tangerang Banten. The professional golfer who begun his amateur career in the United States shot a 278 (72-65-707-70), or 10 under …

Rory himself in a brief statement noted that he was very happy and honored that the PGPI is now willing to recognize his name. “But I really did not expect to win, since I faced stiff competition from Andik Mauluddin,” said Rory, who had to leave immediately the following day for Spain to participate in the European Tour Qualifying School, representing Indonesia.

Rory’s success was able to answer many doubts. He “controversially” participated in the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational, held in Pantai Indah Kapuk Golf Course last August, and did not make the cut. However with much more preparation for the 2008 International Championship, part of the ASEAN Tour series, he finally was able to conquer those qualms and came out a winner.

The Indonesian Professional Golf Association, represented by Ketua Marian PGPI, Nursalam Tabusalla, conducted a Playing Ability Test on October 12, 2008 in which Rory participated and successfully passed, before the International Championship.

Rory’s accomplishment also brings great pride to to Bintang Jultarso from the International Sports Tour, as the event organizer of the championship. “Last year the winner was Danny Chia from Malasia. This year’s is our own local golfer from the host country, which made us even more satisfied and proud,” said Bintang.

MAIDEN WIN FOR HIE IN INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
October 25: Indonesia’s Rory Hie completed an impressive victory in the US$50,000 International Championship on the Mercedes-Benz Tour today to quickly announce his arrival among the professional ranks.

Hie, who turned professional in August following a brilliant college career in the United States, fired a final round two-under-par 70 to finish three strokes clear of another rising star from Indonesia, Mauludin Andik.

Andik, the country’s top amateur who is on the brink of turning professional, carded a 69 at Imperial Klub Golf, near Jakarta.

Filipino Jay Bayron finished four strokes behind the winner in outright third place after closing with a 70.

“It feels great to win. I am glad I did especially as I had a four shot lead at the start of the day,” said Hie, who finished with a four-round-aggregate of 10-under-par 278.

The victory marked the first time an Indonesian has won on the Mercedes-Benz Tour and earned him a place in the season ending Mercedes-Benz Masters Thailand – which is the Tour Championship.

“This will certainly help my confidence especially as I am heading to the European Tour Qualifying School next month,” added Hie, who earned a cheque for US$8,126.

The 20 year old played for the University of Southern California and at one point was ranked sixth best amateur in the world. The talented golfer attended college for two years and then opted to leave prematurely as he felt he was ready for the professional game.

Andik, aged 26, got off to an inspired start and drew level with playing partner Hie after making birdies on the first four holes.

However, Hie restored order with birdies on the seventh and eighth and later 13 and 14.

HIE HOLDS FOUR STROKE LEAD

October 24: Indonesia’s impressive young golfer Rory Hie took a firm grip of the US$50,000 International Championship today on the Mercedes-Benz Tour after opening up a four-stroke lead following the third round.

The 20 year old carded a two-under-par 70 at Imperial Klub Golf, near Jakarta, while his campatriot Mauludin Andik and Jay Bayron from the Philippines lie in joint second place

Andik, the country’s number one amateur who started the day in a tie for the lead with Hie, returned a 74 while Bayron shot a 73.

Filipino Marvin Dumandan, who lost this tournament last year despite having a seven stroke lead going into the final day, is a stroke further back after firing a 70.

Hie’s leap up the leaderboard was expected by many this week as he turned professional in August following a brilliant amateur career in the United States.

He played for the University of Southern California and at one point was ranked sixth best amateur in the world. The talented golfer attended college for two years and then opted to leave prematurely as he felt he was ready for the professional game.

The decision appears to be justified as he closes in on a victory that would mark the first time that an Indonesian has won on the Mercedes-Benz Tour.

He had a poor start when he bogeyed the first two holes following three putts but then retaliated with birdies on three and four.

“I am pleased with the way I came back after those two three putts. I just tried to stay positive and not duck out,” said Hie, who moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was 10.

He also birdied the sixth and seventh to establish his authority on the tournament. He dropped a shot on the 11th and then holed a monster 50-foot putt on number 15 for a birdie.

“I feel very comfortable in the lead and very relaxed but obviously there is a lot still to do,” added Hie, who has a three round aggregate of eight-under-par 208.

RORY ROARS INTO LEAD

October 23: Rookie professional Rory Hie from Indonesia lived up to his billing as one of Asia’s most exciting young golfing prospects when he fired a course-record six-under-par 66 to take a share of the lead in the International Championship today.

The 20 year old nailed six birdies for a two-round total of six-under-par 138 to help make it a special day for Indonesia as also on top of the leader board is his compatriot Mauludin Andik.

Andik, the country’s top amateur, shot a 68 at Imperial Klub Golf, just outside Jakarta.

Jay Bayron from the Philippines, the joint first round leader with countryman Michael Bibat, returned a 70 to lie one off the pace.

Hie turned professional in August after starring for the University of Southern California golf college team for two years. He was ranked as the sixth best amateur in the game at one point following four college victories.

He opted to turn professional early and made his professional debut in the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational in August on the Asian Tour. He surprisingly missed the cut on that occasion but is making amends this week.

“That’s my best round since turning professional. It feels real good,” said Hie, whose parents moved from Indonesia to Los Angeles when he was 10.

He started his round on the back nine and made birdies on 11, 14 and 15. On the front side he stamped his mark on the tournament by making short putts for birdie on seven, eight and nine.

“I felt it was the right time to leave college as I reckoned I was ready for the professional game. It was a move that I would of had to have made later anyway,” added Hie, who heads to the European Tour Qualifying School in November.

From www.pipinvitational.com:

Jakarta, August 27: Local hotshot Rory Hidayat Hie has joined the professional ranks in the hopes of a top finish at the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational with main sponsor Qatar Telecom on Wednesday.

Hie was the seventh ranked amateur in the world before deciding to turn professional at the Damai Indah Golf and Country Club today.

The 19-year-old golfer will lead the array of local players at the US$400,000 event alongside Asian Tour stars in the likes of Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, defending champion Juvic Pagunsan of the Philippines, big hitting Australian Scott Hend and compatriot Rick Kulacz, who won the Brunei Open on Sunday, India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar, who finished runner-up last year, Malaysia’s Ben Leong and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang.

Having enjoyed a successful amateur career with four amateur wins in United States, Hie is eager for a memorable birthday present in his maiden Asian Tour appearance this week.

“I’ve decided to turn professional today because I believe I am ready to compete against the professional players. I’ve played in only one other professional event before this in United States but I hope to focus my game in Asia now. I know I have the ability to compete against the best players here. My birthday is coming up on September 1st and it would be a great present too,” said Hie, who was studying at the University of Southern California for the past two years before deciding to shift his focus to Asia.

“I’m coming in here in good form. In an amateur event in Atlanta last month, I fired six straight birdies which won me the tournament. It was one of my highlights so far. I’ve also lost out in a play off to Anthony Kim in an amateur event in 2006 but I believe this week is different as everyone has an equal opportunity to win.

“I would like to join the Asian Tour and compete in future events so this week will be crucial for me. I aim to finish in the top-10 and strive for a win if possible,” said Hie.

Hie picked up the game at the age of five before heading to United States where he joined the local junior circuit.

“I won the High School State Championship and the Regional High School Championship in California in 2006 and became the second player after Tiger Woods to win both titles in the same year. But it’s a nice feeling to be back to my home country now. I like the conditions in Jakarta and adapt well so it’s going to be exciting,” he added.

Benton Harbor, Mich. (Thursday, July 31) –Rory Hie and Morgan Hoffman matched a pair of 68s in the opening two rounds of the 2008 Western Amateur at Point O’Woods Golf & Country Club to take the clubhouse lead heading into Friday’s 36-hole marathon to determine the championship’s “Sweet 16.”

Hie, 19, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Hoffman, 18, of Wyckoff, N.J. topped the field of players competing in the morning rounds today. Half the field is still on the course. The top 16 players following Friday’s two final rounds will advance to match play on Saturday.

“This is my fourth year here, and I’ve never made it to match play,” said Hie, a University of Southern California junior. “I really want to do well … I feel pretty confident. Hopefully, I’ll make match play and go from there.”

At 4-under-par 136, Hie has reason to be confident.

“I hit a lot of greens today, and it could have been better if I had made a few more putts,” he said.

A 2008 NCAA first-team All American, Hie said 2008 has been “a breakout year,” with wins at the Dogwood Invitational and in two collegiate events.

“I’ve always worked hard, but I have a different mindset. I don’t think about mechanics,” he said. “I’m more of a feel player now.”

ORLANDO, FLA. – Rory Hie enters this week’s Southern Amateur a bit road-weary but pleased with how his game is coming together.

The USC junior is ranked No. 10 in the Golfweek/Scratch Players World Amateur Rankings. During a rain delay at the July 15 practice round at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, he pointed to the progress he’s made this past year.

“I’m hitting the driver straight and long and trying to work on my pitching and short game,’’ said Hie, who with No. 4-ranked Danny Lee and No. 5 Kyle Stanley headlines a solid Southern field opposite the U.S. Public Links.

Hie, 19, of Los Angeles, is playing a busy national schedule while traveling with his parents Tommy and Rita. Hie contended at the Sunnehanna (T-11) and the Northeast (T-4) before a breakthrough victory at the Dogwood Invitational thanks to a final-round 62. A stumble via a second-round exit at the North & South Amateur preceded a T-27 at the Players Amateur last week. He thinks he’s due.

He pointed to his short-game progress from his freshman to sophomore seasons at USC. Hie noted that he ranked last among the Trojans starters in “up-and-down stats’’ – from 30 yards and in, excluding sand – as a freshman. As a sophomore, he led the team in that category.

“If I putt well, I feel I can win,’’ Hie said. “My swing is always there.’’

As a first-team All-American, Hie has landed an exemption into the Nationwide Tour’s Children’s Hospital Invitational July 24-27 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course in Columbus.

After that, the Hie Road Show continues at the Western Amateur in Benton Harbor, Mich.

From usctrojans.com

BIRMINGHAM , Ala. – Southern Cal All-American Rory Hie has been named as the Southern Golf Association’s National

Hie closed the tournament with a stunning 10-under-par 62 to win by three shots with a total of 19-under-par 267. The feat

capped off an impressive June for Hie, who started the month fresh from a 13th place finish in the NCAA championship. Two weeks later, he posted a fourth-place tie in the prestigious Northeast Amateur in Rhode Island as his final tune-up before the Dogwood.

Hie is a rising junior at USC from Lakewood , CA .

The 5-year-old SGA award is determined each month by a blue-ribbon national selection panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. Previous winners this year have included Oklahoma State ’s Trent Leon, Alabama’s Michael Thompson and UCLA’s Kevin Chappell. The 106-year-old Southern Golf Association promotes amateur golf in a variety of ways, including the staging of the prestigious Southern Amateur Championship, which will include Hie in the field, July 16-19 at the Lake Nona Club in Orlando , FL.

In a battle among USC teammates, Rory Hie, No. 8 in the SPWAR and a first-team All-American as a sophomore last season, edged past No. 54 Tom Glissmeyer, 2 up. Glissmeyer, from Colorado Springs, Colo., was 2 up after three holes, but the match was all square after 7. Hie won Nos. 8 and 10, but Glissmeyer won 11 and 13. Hie closed things out by winning Nos. 16 and 18 with birdies.

“It was a tough match and tough to play because we are teammates,” said Hie, who last week won the Dogwood Invitational. “I knew I was going to have to play well today to beat him and I did. I was 2 under. Right now it’s just a big relief.”

Rory shot a first round of 67 and a second round of 66 for a total of 5-under, tying for 2nd place.

From golfweek.com:

Hie, a Ping first-team All-American as a sophomore last season, had four birdies against a lone bogey that came at No. 16 when he failed to get up-and-down out of a bunker.

“Overall, it was a good, steady day,” Hie said. “I like this golf course. I think it suits my game because I’m more accurate than I am long. I’m also playing with a lot more confidence and I think that’s a carryover from the college season.”

From projo.com:

Hie, a first-team All-American at Southern Cal this year, moved toward the top with a 66, matching the low round of the day.

“It was a very nice day. I hit the ball really well,’ he said. While he had four birdies, the highlight, he felt, was saving par on the par-3 eighth.

“I hit a bad tee shot. It hit a tree and bounced out and I managed to save par,” Hie said.

From The Tribune Democrat:

For Hie, it was a memorable day for more than just his strong first round. The University of Southern California golfer and Los Angeles native, put four birdies on his card.

But his bogey-free round was threatened by the arrival of one VIP.

“I caught a glimpse of Arnold Palmer there and I started hitting these bad shots,” Hie said. “Luckily, I got up and down on those shots. I was hitting it real well, then I saw him and I was like, ‘Aw, shoot.’ I couldn’t really breathe out there for a while, but then I got back into my rhythm and made some shots.”

Hie had one of his best efforts in front of the golfing legend when he blasted a 30-yard shot out of a bunker at No. 14 to four feet, and then made the putt for par.

From usctrojans.com:

The No. 3 USC men’s golf team won its third tournament in its last four events while sophomore Rory Hie won his second tournament of the season and became Troy’s third individual winner in the past four starts on the final day of the U.S. Intercollegiate Championships at the Stanford G.C. in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday (April 20).

The Trojans, in their regular-season finale, finished at 12-under 828 (266-287-275), 13 strokes ahead of host Stanford (1-over 841-279-293-269). Cal and UCLA tied for third (857). USC’s final round was the second lowest of the day.

Hie, who … was named this week a semifinalist for The Ben Hogan Award honoring the nation’s best collegiate golfer, sunk five more birdies to give him 15 for the 54-hole event. He finished at 10-under 200 (62-71-67). It was his second win of the season, the first coming at the UNLV Southern Highlands Collegiate five weeks ago.

From golfweek.com:

Hie, USC dominate U.S. Collegiate

Blame sophomore Rory Hie (pictured) and his USC teammates for draining the excitement out of the final round of the U.S. Collegiate. Hie and USC both cruised to large victories Sunday.

From golfweek.com

STANFORD, Calif. – The final round of the U.S. Collegiate proved to be about as exciting as watching paint dry, which was perfectly fine with USC coach Chris Zambri.

Sophomore Rory Hie and the Trojans both carried large leads heading into the final 18 holes, and they never let up. Hie eventually won by eight shots, also helping his team to a 13-shot victory.

And those totals were the closest they had been all day.

The Trojans closed with a 5-under-par 275 to finish at 12-under 828. Host team Stanford, with the best round of the day at 11-under 269, was next at 841 while California and UCLA finiahsed a distant third at 17-over 857.

“We played great today, but USC just had an insurmountable lead and never came close to faltering,” said Stanford coach Conrad Ray.

“They definitely showed why they are one of the top teams in the country.”

Hie, who opened the tournament with a competitive course-record 62, shot a closing 3-under 67 and finished at 10-under 200…

USC started the final round with a 14-shot lead over Stanford and the Trojans never had to break a sweat. By the halfway point, they led by 17.

“We started out great (14-under 266 the first round) and never let up which I’m really proud of,” said Zambri. “I feel the guys want to prove something everytime they tee it up. I think they did that here.”

It was USC’s third win of the spring to go with a victory in its own tournament the one at the U.S. Collegiate where nine of the top 11 teams in the country were featured.

“The win in Georgia (U.S. Collegiate) was huge because of the quality of the field, but this one is really big because it gives us a lot of confidence and momentum going into the post-season (Pac-10 Championship and NCAA regionals). There’s no doubt these guys feel they are one of the best teams in the country.”

But it was Hie who attracted the most attention. Starting with his 62, he added a 71 — third best score of a windy and cold second round — and finished it off with a four-birdie, one-bogey closing round.

“This is by far my best tournament,” said Hie, who earlier this spring won UNLV’s Southern Highlands Intercollegiate. “The 62, that was the best ball striking round I’ve ever had. I shot 62 in Hawaii this spring and it was a par-70 as well, but the conditions were perfect. This was a much more difficult course and the conditions were a lot tougher.

“I knew my game was good enough to win in college and to shoot low scores,” said Hie, who now has three career college victories. “It was just a matter of executing good golf shots. I also think I’ve matured a lot since starting college and I’m beginning to feel more and more comfortable out here.”

Zambri had only praise for his “other” sophomore star.

“He is a great swinger of the golf club,” Zambri said. “His short game is starting to catch up to his long game and his confidence keeps getting higher and higher. He works harder than everybody else and is starting to really understand what it takes to be successful. His game is world class and as his confidence continues to grow it will only get better.”

Hie’s 62 leads USC at U.S. Intercollegiate

STANFORD, Calif. – Sparked by a first-round 8-under 62 from Rory Hie, USC surged into the lead Saturday at the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course.

The Trojans followed a first-round 14-under 266 with an 8-over 288 during a windy and cold afternoon second round to stand at 6-under 554. Although USC, No. 5 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, was 22 shots higher in the afternoon, it still posted the lowest score among the 17 teams.

Host Stanford, No. 11, is a distant second, 18 shots back, at 12-over 572 after rounds of 279-293, while No. 3 UCLA is at 574 and California is 577.

Hie, a junior, also had a toug time in second round conditions, but shot 1-over 71 and leads at 7-under 133.

Much like his team, Hie takes a comfortable lead into Sunday’s final 18 holes, standing six shots clear of teammate Tom Glissmeyer.

“The guys played great in the morning and, while the scores may not show it, probably played better in the afternoon considering the conditions,” said USC coach Chris Zambri. “I think they really showed how tough they can be this afternoon.

“Rory had a fantastic day, especially his first round, but when you look at Tom and Jamie and what they did, you know it was a team effort.”

Hie’s opening round 62 was one stroke off the course record, shot only a few weeks earlier by Stanford senior Rob Grube during a practice round with teammates.

Beginning on the second hole in the shotgun start, Hie made birdie then closed the front side with three consecutive birdies. On the back side he added birdies at Nos. 11, 13 and 16, and closed out the round with a birdie at the opening hole. That gave him a four-shot lead over Glissmeyer, who had a five-birdie, one-bogey 66.

In the afternoon, Hie started with eight consecutive pars before making his first bogey of the tournament at No. 12.

“Everything was going right in the morning,” Hie said. “I really hit it solid and had my putter going. Conditions got a lot tougher in the afternoon. I made some bogeys, but I’m proud of the way I hung in there. I think 1 over in the afternoon was a pretty good score.”

The Trojans, in their regular-season finale, fired a blistering 14-under 266 first round to take a commanding lead and maintained the large advantage after two rounds. He opened his round, which began on the second hole, with a birdie en route to 4-under on both halves of his first round. The Lakewood, Calif., native had a more modest second round, but still leads the tournament at 7-under 133 (62-71).

From goducks.com:

The Trojans were led on the final day by Rory Hie, who rebounded from a disappointing third round 74 to card the best round of the day, 6-under 66, to move to 9-under and fourth place.

From usctrojans.cstv.com:

Hie moved up the leaderboard with a USC best 66 that included seven birdies, four on the front 9. He was 7-under until a bogey on the 17th hole, but still easily posted his 11th round in the 60s this season. Hie’s fourth-place finish was his fourth top 6 finish in USC’s last six tournaments.

From pac-10.org:

Hie, like Lovemark a freshman, matched the tournament’s best score by shooting a 66 to lead the field Wednesday.

“I made a lot of putts today that I usually don’t,” Hie said. “I made a lot of 20-footers off the green, 25-footers. And I made most of my 10-footers today. I just took it one shot at a time today, instead of, like yesterday, trying to catch up with Jamie. That worked well.”

Rory Tied for 2nd After Two Rounds in the PAC-10 Championships

Post category: Tournaments, Article, USC | link

From usctrojans.cstv.com:

Freshman Jamie Lovemark is 9-under after two rounds while freshman teammate Rory Hie is 5-under, pacing four Trojans who are under par through the first 36 holes and establishing an eight-shot team lead on Monday (April 23), halfway through the 2007 Pac-10 Championships at the Eugene (Ore.) C.C.

USC, ranked No. 5 in the latest Golfword.com poll, posted rounds of 358 (-2) and 342 (-16) for a two-round 700 (-18). UCLA is in second (355-353, 708) while Stanford is in third (356-364, 720). The Pac-10 Championships, unlike most tournaments, features six-player teams with the low five scores counting toward each 18-hole round.

“I think we got off to somewhat of a slow start, but we were able to get it together,” first-year USC head coach Chris Zambri said. “I think we have a good team and I’m not totally surprised they played this well.

“Rory has been playing great all spring. He’s just such a good ball striker that he can shoot 5-under and not make a lot of putts.”

Hie is tied for second, four shots behind Lovemark with a 36-hole 139 (-5). He opened play with a par 72 that included three birdies and three bogeys, then followed it with a season-low tying 67. The second round included a 4-under on the front 9 for his 10th sub-70 round of the season. Hie is tied with Arizona State’s Niklas Lemke.

“I gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities and made some putts,” Hie said. “Everything worked pretty well today. It was pretty nice to see everyone play well in the second round.”

From pac-10.org:

EUGENE, Ore. – Paced by freshmen Jamie Lovemark and Rory Hie and a torrid second round overall, sixth-ranked Southern California jumped out to an eight-stroke lead after the opening day of the Pac-10 Conference men’s golf championships Monday at the Eugene Country Club.

… Hie, who was tied for 21st after the first round, made six birdies his second time through to finish the day tied for second place at 5-under with Niklas Lemke of Arizona State.

Their success helped propel USC into first place at 20-under-par 700, including an18-under-par 342 second round. The Trojans had been in a tie for fourth place with Oregon after the opening round.

… Hie, who came in ranked 81st, made four birdies on the final five holes of the front nine in his second round to move into second.

“You know, he’s actually had our lowest spring scoring average,” Zambri said. “Rory’s been playing great all spring. He’s finished in the top 12 in five of his last seven events.”

From usctrojans.cstv.com:

Freshman Rory Hie tied for third and three other Trojans finished among the top 20 as the No. 5 USC men’s golf team finished third at the 2007 ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Sunday (April 15) at the Karsten G.C. in Tempe, Ariz.

For the ninth time in 10 outings, the Trojans finished among the top five, this time alone in third with a three-day 849 (-15), five shots back of winner Oregon (844). USC sliced a couple strokes off the Ducks lead with a final round 286. Host and No. 18 Arizona State was second (847).

Hie followed his first-round 67 and second-round 69 with another 69 for a three-day 215 (-11) to tie for third with San Diego State’s Aaron Goldberg. New Mexico’s Charlie Beljan won the title with a 201 (-15), passing Oregon’s Derek Sipe (204) on the final day.

As he did in the first round, Hie carded par or better throughout the final 18 holes, birdying three holes in the process. During the 54-hole invitational, Hie was no worse than par - was 8-under overall - on the back 9. Hie’s finish was his second best this season (behind only his title-winning performance at the USC Collegiate).

Golf: Dream season for Hie and Orr
By Matt Zimmerman, Staff writer

Focus and finish.

A motto, a style, a mantra, a motivation. A mandate to stay the course, to keep one’s head in the game, to close out strong.

At Cerritos High, Rory Hie has been a major part of the boys golf team. For a squad that was always in the thick of the Suburban League race, he played four years, winning the Knabe Cup and the league individual title among his personal accolades.

But it was this season, the final one in high school for the USC-bound Hie, that he dominated. Indeed, he found the focus to finish his career on its highest note, winning the CIF Southern Section Individual Tournament and the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) Tournament.

“It’s just because I’m playing in less national junior tournaments this year,” said Hie, who joined Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win both tournaments in the same season. “I had a lot of time, therefore I could prepare better for (CIF) than in the previous years. That’s why I played pretty well this year.”

***

For their efforts this season, for focusing well and finishing strong, Hie is the 2006 Press-Telegram Dream Team Boys Golf Player of the Year, and Orr is the Coach of the Year.

***

Hie closed out his prep career with a fifth-place finish at the CIF State tournament, three strokes under par at 69. Though he expressed the disappointment that can be expected from an athlete who sets high personal standards, Hie had driven from a U.S. Open qualifying tournament in Northern California, where he finished just out of a playoff.

“That’s a goal that I set every year, is to improve what I did the previous year,” Hie said. “If I continue improving, then I think I have a lot better chance next year of getting in the U.S. Open.”

Golf: Hie takes fifth place in state tourney
Press-Telegram Staff Reports

Many golfers would call shooting a 3-under 69 at the CIF State tournament the best day of their lives. Cerritos senior Rory Hie’s take?

“Today was not my day.”

Perhaps, since Hie’s score Tuesday at Santa Maria Country Club was good only for fifth place, five strokes behind champion Rickie Fowler of Murrieta Valley High, who shot a 64. Earlier this postseason, Hie had won both the CIF Southern Section and SCGA tournaments, becoming the only golfer to do so in the same season other than Tiger Woods.

Monday, Hie played in a U.S. Open qualifier, missing a playoff by two strokes after double bogeying the final hole.

“It was Rickie’s day, he caught lightning in a bottle today,” Hie said. “I was kind of tired from yesterday. I felt like I couldn’t focus on my game today because of the U.S. Open qualifying.”

Hie, who was on the Cerritos varsity for all four of his prep seasons, will next play golf for USC.

“Last year was kind of a bummer for me. I didn’t really do well in high school at all. This year I started out differently. I set a goal for myself to raise my game to another level,” Hie said. “I felt like I’ve done that this season. But unfortunately, I didn’t reach my goal, which was to win state. But I won plenty of awards along the way, so I’m pretty happy with the way I finished this year.”

On the final day of the boys golf season, Rory Hie of Cerritos High will stand alone. At least, alone as far as area golfers are concerned. Hie won the CIF Southern Section Individual Championship and the SCGA Individual Championship, and has the fullest trophy case among the 48 golfers competing today in both team and individual competition.

The event, of course, is the CIF State finals, which are at Santa Maria Country Club. Hie will compete after spending Monday playing in a U.S. Open qualifier.

“I’m ready to make the drive to Santa Maria,” said the USC-bound Hie last week. “Right after I try to qualify for the U.S. Open, June 5, the day before.”

Hie shot a 6-under-par 66 to win both the CIF-SS and the SCGA tournaments.

Cerritos’ Hie to Try for History at State Golf Championships
Peter Yoon; Eric Sondheimer, From Times Staff Reports
June 6, 2006

Rory Hie of Cerritos will attempt to make history Tuesday when he plays in the state golf championships at Santa Maria Country Club.

Hie, a senior who signed with USC, won the Southern Section individual championship and the CIF-Southern California Golf Assn. regional championship. Should he win the state title, he would be the first to achieve that trifecta.

Only one player has won the Southern Section and regional championships in the same year: Tiger Woods in 1991. However, no state championships were contested that year. State championships for boys’ golf were held from 1976 to 1981 and reinstated in 2004.

In a battle of incoming USC freshmen, Rory Hie of Cerritos High defeated Jamie Lovemark of Torrey Pines High in a playoff to win the 2006 CIF-SCGA Southern Regional Championships on Friday (June 1).

Hie fired a 6-under 66 to defeat Lovemark. Both will begin their freshman year at USC in the upcoming fall semester.

Despite windy conditions, Hie, collected seven birdies and only one bogey on the 6,702-yard par-72 course, while future USC teammate and Lovemark came away with eight birdies and two bogies. Hie was victorious on the par-4 ninth in the one-hole playoff, scoring a four to Lovemark’s five.

Lovemark’s Torrey Pines’ team tied for first, but lost the team title on a six-man tiebreaker.

Cerritos’ Hie in Good Company After Winning Title
By Peter Yoon, Times Staff Writer
June 2, 2006

Comparisons to Tiger Woods are almost inevitable when you’re a hotshot high school golfer, but there aren’t many who can say they matched a Woods accomplishment.

Rory Hie can.

Hie, a Cerritos senior, shot six-under-par 66 Thursday at the SCGA Members Golf Course in Murrieta, then made a par on the first hole of a playoff with Jamie Lovemark of San Diego Torrey Pines to win the Southern California regional championship.

Hie won the Southern Section championship on May 22, and Thursday’s victory made him the only player since Woods in 1991 to win both titles in the same season.

“Wow,” said Hie, somewhat taken aback by his accomplishment. “That’s pretty cool.”

Hie, who has signed with USC, had seven birdies and a bogey in his round Thursday. His iron play was impeccable as evidenced by his 17 greens in regulation and eight approach shots to within five feet of the pin. Of his seven birdies, only one came on a putt of more than five feet.

On the playoff hole, he found a fairway bunker with his two-iron tee shot but hit a nine iron from 131 yards to within 15 feet for an easy two-putt. Lovemark found the trees on the right side with his drive and had to pitch out. His third shot ended up 15 feet short of the hole and he missed the par putt, setting the stage for Hie’s victory.

“I just tried to make as many birdies as I could,” Hie said. “It was a one-day tournament, so I had to play as aggressive as possible.”

He also had to play with the correct irons. A year ago, Hie received a new set of irons the day before the Southern Section championships and took a chance by using them in the competition. He shot 74, finished tied for 41st and did not advance to the regional.

“I switched back the next day,” he said. “And I’m still using the old ones. I guess I was just too excited to get them. I couldn’t wait to use them.”

Success is nothing new to Hie, who is ranked No. 8 in the nation among boys and has been as high as No. 2. He has won two national junior tournaments and has 20 top-10 finishes. Last summer, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur public links championships and he will play in the sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open on Monday.

This orange was not to be eaten, it would not be found in anyones lunch or provide Vitamin C for someone. No, it was destined to serve as inspiration, to be smacked by a small persimmon driver, 5-year-old Rory Hie swinging with glee as he enjoyed his first taste of golf. With form that would undoubtedly improve greatly in the coming years, Hie struck his target, sending it about 10 yards as it exploded.

And, 12 years ago four years before beginning serious lessons and three years before leaving his native Jakarta, Indonesia with his family to come to the United States Hie had his sport of choice. Today, he leads four area golfers into individual competition at the SCGA Tournament in Murietta.

Ive always been a quiet person, and its easy for me to get on task, just do it, said Hie, a Cerritos High senior who is joined by Tommy Lee (Gahr), Alex Resurreccion (Poly) and Scott Yeakel (Wilson) in todays competition. I just like to see the ball go up in the air, and see it go in the hole when Im putting.

Hie, Cathedral Catholic win CIF-SCGA Southern Regional Championship Jun 1, 2006

Cerritos High School senior Rory Hie fired a 6-under-par 66 and defeated Torrey Pines senior Jamie Lovemark in a playoff to capture the individual title while players from Cathedral Catholic High School of San Diego broke a tie with Torrey Pines High School and combined for a 3-over-par 363 to win the CIF-SCGA Southern Regional Championship today at The SCGA Golf Course in Murrieta. Despite windy conditions, Hie, who signed to play with the University of Southern California’s golf team, collected seven birdies and only one bogey on the 6,702-yard par-72 course, while future USC teammate and Torrey Pines senior Jamie Lovemark came away with eight birdies and two bogies. Hie was victorious on the par-4 ninth in the one-hole playoff, which he scored a four to Lovemark’s five.

From Today’s Local News:

Emerick was in good company on the course. Cerritos Rory Hie golfed in Emericks quartet and recorded a 6-under-par 66 for the tournament individual championship. He won a playoff round versus Torrey Pines Jamie Lovemark, who also shot a 66.

Rory played well and that rubs off on you a bit, Emerick said.

MURRIETA - They havent done any team bonding exercises yet, but future USC golfers Rory Hie and Jamie Lovemark sure acted like teammates at the CIF/SCGA championship Thursday afternoon at the SCGA Members Course in Murrieta.

Hie and Lovemark each shot 6-under 66s on a day when only 17 of the 124 players were able to break par. Hie, a senior at Cerritos High, beat Lovemark in a one-hole playoff to capture medalist honors. Hie also shot a 66 last week to win the Southern Section individual title at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

The top six finishers not on one of the top three teams advance to the CIF State Championship in Santa Maria on Monday. None of the 17 local players competing Thursday advanced.

Its weird. You want to beat him, but you dont want to beat him because hes going to be your teammate, said Lovemark, a senior at Torrey Pines High near San Diego.

Hie, Lovemark, Evan Emerick (Carlsbad, -3), James Erkenbeck (Torrey Pines, -3), Rickie Fowler (Murrieta Valley, -3), Bryan Hogan (Stockdale, -2), Kevin Sepulveda (Paso Robles, -2) and Tom Whitney (La Quinta, -2) qualified for the state championship.

Rory shot 7 under par (65) today at the first round of the AJGA Thunderbird International, recording a total of 10 birdies, taking into account the 2-stroke penalty that he faced (see below for details). Without the penalty, Rory would have had 11 birdies and broken the course record by shooting a 63 (the course record of Grayhawk GC being 64).

Previous updates throughout the round:

Rory is currently leading the AJGA Thunderbird International by two strokes, shooting 6 under par through the 14th hole.

Snapshot taken from AJGA’s LIVE Scoring

[Edit] On the 15th hole (Hole #6), Rory was penalized two strokes under Rule 15-3b for mistakenly hitting another player’s ball (the other player also hit Rory’s ball by mistake). However he strived for the hole and chipped-in for a birdie (which, with the two strokes penalty, becomes a bogey) and still retains his position with a one stroke lead (5-under).

[Edit] Rory makes a comeback with a birdie in the 16th hole (Hole #7) and another birdie in the 17th hole (Hole #8). Falling short of another birdie in the 18th hole (Hole #9) by mere inches, he finished the round with a 7-under par 65.

HIE EN FUEGO IN THE DESERT AT THUNDERBIRD INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Rory Hie of Lakewood, Calif., was as hot as the desert sun during the first round of the Thunderbird International Junior on Saturday, firing a 7-under-par 65 to take a three-shot lead in the Boys Division.

Hie, who began on No. 10, got off to a good start with back-to-back 20-foot birdie putts on Nos. 11 and 12. His bad break came on No. 6 when he hit the wrong ball, incurred a two-stroke penalty, and ended up with a bogey.

I had a pretty good round today, the 17-year Rolex Junior All-American said. I committed to every shot and got lucky with a couple of shots.

Hie had a career-best 10 birdies with three bogeys and nines of 34-31.

Ten birdies is a dream come true for me, Hie said. I saw the ball going in every hole and it did. I noticed a lot of players under par on the leaderboards, so I just tried not to give up shots to the field.

A quote from Golfweek:

“… It may have even got a bit more confusing Saturday when Rory Hie, Golfweek’s No. 1 junior at one point last summer, and Kevin Tway hit each other’s balls from the sixth fairway and were both penalized two strokes. (Amazingly, Hie - who blamed the mistake on being “brain dead” - still shot 65 to take the first-round lead by three shots, while Tway, the reigning U.S. Junior champion, shot 76.)”

Rory Hie, a 17-year-old senior at Cerritos High School in Lakewood, was medalist with a 67, including seven birdies.

“I got lucky on the greens today,” Hie said of the firm, fast putting surfaces on the South Course. “I tried to lag my long putts, and some of them actually fell in. I also gave away a lot of shots today. But I got lucky on a few shots, so it kind of evens out.”

RORY HIE

Sr., Cerritos

Then: Showed himself to be among the best golfers at his school early on, posting a runner-up finish at the Southern Section’s Southern Regional qualifying tournament as a freshman. He ran away with the Suburban League individual title as a sophomore with a nine-under-par 203 over 54 holes, followed by a three-over 75 in the Southern Regional qualifier for the Southern Section championships, where he had a one-under 71 to finish three strokes behind winner Lucas Lee of Torrance. After a runner-up finish in the league championship last season, Hie won the Southern Regional qualifying tournament with a five-under 67 at SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach. He had a postseason stroke average of 69.4 for 18 holes as a junior and earned American Junior Golf Assn. first-team All-American honors in 2004 and 2005.

Now: Hie is making the most of his final year of high school competition before heading to USC on a golf scholarship, improving his nine-hole stroke average from 36.5 last year to 35.1 this season. Ten days ago, he won the individual championship of the Knabe Cup, one of the top high school tournaments in the Southland, for the second time in three seasons by firing a one-under par 71 over 18 holes in overcast, windy conditions at Lakewood Country Club. His efforts helped the Dons (12-1 overall, 8-0 in dual matches) place sixth among 36 teams with a four-player combined score of 315. Earlier this week, Hie placed third in the 2006 Los Angeles City Junior Golf Championships at Wilson and Harding golf courses at Griffith Park.

Quote: “He’s somebody that the other players look to,” Coach Tim Paulson said. “They can see what it means to be a great golfer because they’re playing with one.”

Rory won the Knabe Cup 2006, held on Wednesday April 5, 2006 in Lakewood Country Club, taking home the title for the second time since 2004. He overcame gusty conditions on the course and pulled off a 1-under 71, the only red marks on the scoreboard that day. Quote from the Press Telegram:

“Though there were plenty of new ‘water hazards’ on the course as a result of recent rain, Wednesday’s clear skies indicated that Mother Nature herself was interested in seeing this year’s Knabe Cup.

However, strong winds that helped spike scores and frustrate the boys high school golfers at Lakewood Country Club indicated that maybe Ms. Nature was up to a bit of mischief watching the groups struggle. Either way, when the 36 high schools represented by teams of four apiece were finished, the top teams were all bunched together, and only one golfer, Cerritos senior Rory Hie, shot under par with a 71 on the par-72 course.

‘It was pretty windy out there. I know people think that it’s going to be hard, but then I just keep telling myself, just play your game, just play like there is no wind out there,’ said the USC-bound Hie, who laughingly denied that he had weather-control powers. ‘It’s just tiring. I felt like I want to give up on a hole, and then I just keep telling myself, you’ve got to keep going, you’ve got to keep hitting your shots. When I saw the scoreboard, and it was all (done), I was pretty happy.’

On a decidedly blustery day, Hie’s score bettered the next-best competitors by four strokes. It was the second time in three years Hie won the individual competition at the Knabe Cup, and he finished one stroke off the lead in last year’s tournament.’

When Jamie Lovemark decided to sign a letter of intent to attend the University of Southern California, Rory Hie, another standout, elected to become a Trojan as well. That coup made the USC recruiting class the best in the country.

“We’re pumped about these kids, we really are,” said Gleason, who has one scholarship available for ‘07. “(Jamie and Rory) were certainly at the top of our list. And Bo and Tyler, maybe not as far as the other coaches were concerned on the national scene, but we sure knew about them and knew they were very good players.”
