Sophomore Rory Hie won a three-way playoff on the first hole and took the individual title on the final day of the UNLV Southern Highland Collegiate at Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas on Sunday (March 9).
USC finished fourth overall at 14-over 878 (285-295-298). UNLV won at 869 and was followed by Charlotte (871), Georgia (872) and USC.
Hie’s final round gave him a 54-hole 3-under 213 (71-69-73) and his team-best fifth top 10 finish. The sophomore was 2-under for much of the round after three birdies on the front 9, but he gave some ground back on the back 9.
Hie finished the final round tied with Georgia’s Hudson Swafford and Charlotte’s Jonas Enander Hedin. Hie and Hedin entered the final round four strokes back of Swafford. Hie made up two strokes on the front 9. Both Hie and Swafford struggled some on the back 9 though Hie actually had the lead before his double bogey on 17 dropped him back into a tie at 3-under overall.
Hie’s win is his first since winning the 2007 USC Collegiate.

Hie takes individual title in playoff final
Sophomore Rory Hie picked up his second career win in a playoff as the USC men’s golf team finished fourth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.
Hie earned a spot in the playoff by firing a 3-under-par 213 (71-69-73). After starting the final round in second place, Hie’s 1-over 73 was enough to climb into a tie for first with Hudson Swafford of Georgia and Jonas Enander Hedin of Charlottewith. Hie won on the first hole of the three-way playoff.
Hie won his first title at the 2007 USC Collegiate Invitational as a freshman. He has a team-high five top 10 finishes on the year.
“I needed to win this season because it’s my goal to be a first team All-American,” Hie said.

Sophomore Rory Hie fired a 3-under 69 as the No. 7 USC men’s golf team, which spent most of the day in first place, fights for its second straight tournament title after two rounds of the UNLV Southern Highland Collegiate at Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas on Saturday (March 8).
USC, at 4-over 580 (285-295), is six shots back of leader Georgia (574) while host UNLV is second (576) and Charlotte is third (578).
Hie is tied for second (four back of the lead) at 4-under 140 (71-69), his second round featuring five birdies, including three in a row between the seventh and ninth holes. Hie is after his team-best fifth top 10 finish.
